Inspired by my sister and brother-in-law's recent 30th wedding anniversary...

Celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary with a re-enactment of their wedding reception the best man stood up at the bridal table, cleared his throat and read the first of a dozen telegrams.  "Don't buy a bed from Myer - they stand behind everything they do!" - Love Aunty Mavis.  Then... "Congratulations! From John Farken, Brendan Farken and the whole Farken family!"   

Never having heard anything like it before 29 year old Mitch (the couples nephew) was in fits of laughter at the seemingly ridiculous tradition of guests madly scrawling their best wishes in the form of a joke onto bits of paper for the best man to read to the couple.  It got me thinking about what else has changed in weddings over the past 30 years?

Tiers, tiers and more tiers - the 1980's were about fruit cakes covered in marzipan and royal icing with the largest tier at the bottom and columns supporting smaller tiers above.  Of course we had to save the top tier to cut when our first born child arrived (mine went mouldy well before this occurred).

While the traditional tiered fruit cake is still enjoyed by many couples (minus the plastic columns), we are trending towards cup cakes in all manner of flavours including red velvet and choc jaffa, naked cakes (where the inside of the cake is exposed), cheese wheels cakes and cakes decorated with cascading fresh flowers or gold leaf.  Yes the wedding cake has certainly transformed but is definitely here to stay!
